FIFTY-five new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus have been recorded across the NHS Highland health board region.

The area’s cumulative number of known cases rose from 8806 to 8861 when the latest figures were published by Public Health Scotland on Friday.

Sixteen people were receiving treatment for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals overnight, down three from yesterday.

There were 1456 positive tests for Covid-19 across the whole of Scotland in the past 24 hours. This represents 6.2 per cent of all those people tested in the country during that period.

Some 474 people were in hospital in Scotland with Covid-19 last night – a fall of 16 from Thursday.

Of those, 60 were in intensive care. This is unchanged from the last update.

Sadly a further six deaths have been reported among people who tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases of the virus in NHS Orkney for the second day running. NHS Shetland’s total rose by four, to 374, while NHS Eileanan Siar recorded three fresh positive tests, taking its tally to 416.

Exactly 100 new infections were recorded across NHS Grampian, for a cumulative figure of 22,686.

And NHS Tayside registered 83 new cases, taking its overall total to 26,518.

There have now been 344,158 known infections across Scotland since the pandemic first began.

Almost 4.01 million Scots have now had their first vaccination injection, while more than 3.16 million have had their second jag.
