Fears over Inverness city centre sink hole prompt complete closure of High Street
Highland Council has announced the emergency complete closure of High Street and Bridge Street in Inverness amid growing concerns over a sink hole.
Problems first became evident yesterday after part of the road surface cracked and collapsed inwards following a water mains burst and issues with a sewer.
The council and Scottish Water are now worried about the risk of further collapse of the road and pavement, and have “unfortunately had to take the decision to fully close the road to through traffic” to investigate and rectify the damage.
The closure may require to remain in place for up to three days and was implemented from 7pm tonight (Thursday, August 8).
The Council has notified bus operators and they will re-route services during the closure period.
A Council spokesman said: “All parties are working together to try and minimise disruption, but some disruption is inevitable.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and aim to have the road reopened as soon as possible.”
