A brave team is currently cycling the NC500 in aid of Cancer Research.

Mike Ling, his sons, Connor and Josh alongside their family friend Alex have taken on the 516-mile ride to raise funds for the charity close to their heart.

Having travelled up from Oxfordshire to take on the gruelling challenge, the men - with the support team of family members - have received a very hospitable welcome from locals at all their stops.

Mike, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2020, said: “It’s been extraordinarily hard. We started training about 18 months ago, but nothing could have prepared us for this!

“It has been awesome but we definitely didn’t know what we were letting ourselves in for!”

Mike’s father was also diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and sadly died on July 13, 2023. The team will be crossing the finish line exactly one year later.

“It’s been very emotional and I think tomorrow will be too,” continued Mike.

“We had planned to do this before my dad passed away last year, so it’s very poignant that we finish on the same day.

“We’re going to be raising a glass at 8.30pm tomorrow to him.”

Tomorrow sees the team take on the 90-mile journey from Applecross to Inverness. Due to a knee injury during a 100-mile segment, Mike has had to be in the support car, however, he hopes to get back on the bike for the last leg.

He said: “Josh, Connor and Alex haven’t stopped! I’ve been an emotional wreck as I’m cross that not on the bike! I have managed just over 200 miles but I just hope I am back out there tomorrow!”

Mike was originally going to cycle from Lands’ End to John o’ Groats but decided the NC500 was a bit more feasible. His sons and friend soon decided to get involved too, and his wife, daughter and son’s girlfriend are all part of the support team travelling in cars.

They are all overwhelmed by the support they have received along the way and have now raised over £6500 for the charity.

“People have been helping us all over the route,” said Mike.

“We stayed at the Poolewe Hotel last night and the owner Gary was just fantastic, keeping the restaurant open for us when we were running later!

“People in campsites have also donated to us - it’s just blown us away!”

The group will be crossing the finish line at the Waterfront Pub in Inverness tomorrow.
