The owner of an Inverness menswear store says customers are delighted they have reopened.

Primo Menswear has been trading since 1928 and successfully reopened following the coronavirus lockdown.

Donald Maclean said his grandfather started Primo Menswear in Dingwall in 1928 and he is the third generation to have run it.

The business moved to Inverness 35 years ago and is currently based at the corner of Queensgate and Academy Street.

Mr Maclean said after they reopened June 29, it was quiet at first but the last two or three weeks had been better.

He said: “Customers are delighted to see us open. Some just wanted to buy something to cheer themselves up. People were so fed up being at home all the time.”

He said a large part of their business was customers buying clothing for social occasions such as weddings and he hoped things would pick up further once restrictions on such events were eased further.

Mr Maclean said he had noticed more people in the city centre and added: “There are certainly a lot more visitors about.”

He said a lot of Primo’s stock was sourced in Germany and they had noticed a lot of German customers. He said: “They don’t see the products back at home. We are always looking for quirky stuff.”

Mr Maclean said he was hopeful for the future and added: “I tend to be an optimist if I can. I don’t think it will come back to what it used to be. We have to make it more of an occasion for people to come to town. Things will have to change, there is no doubt.”

He felt the safety measures which have been put in place in the city centre would help protect the public. He said: “I think people have gone to a lot of effort to try and make sure people are safe.”
