The family of a missing Inverness man have been contacted by police following the discovery of human remains on Orkney.

Officers were called to the Dingieshowe area of the archipelago around 1.30pm on Monday.

The relatives of John Mackay, who is 51 years old and has not been seen since the beginning of last month, have since been informed.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said the identity of the remains was yet to be confirmed and a post mortem examination was being carried out as part of the ongoing investigation.

The spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way to identify human remains found on the beach at Dingieshowe, Orkney. Work is ongoing to confirm the person's identity and to establish what has happened. Officers continue to liaise with the family of John McKay, however, we are unable to confirm anything at this stage.”
