Ex-MP Danny Alexander rules out peerage

FORMER Inverness and Nairn MP Danny Alexander has revealed why he turned down the offer of a peerage and a seat in the House of Lords.

The former chief secretary to the Treasury, who lost his seat at the General Election to the SNP’s Drew Hendry, was offered the opportunity of a peerage by former Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

But Mr Alexander said he did not wish his name to be put forward in the dissolution honours list.

"I have spent my political career arguing for the abolition and reformation of the House of Lords," he explained. "I still believe in that strongly.

"If I want to get back into politics in future, I see myself doing it through elections rather than through a nomination to the House of Lords. For me, that is the right way to do it."

Mr Alexander said he had not decided what to do next but would retain his links with the Highlands.

"I am going to spend time having a rest," he added.
