A project on the outskirts of Inverness to encourage more walking and cycling is nearing completion following delays due to supply issues.

Work on the Raigmore Active Travel Link, being constructed alongside the A9 northbound at the slip road towards the city centre, is expected to be finished by the end of this month.

Previously it was expected to be completed by September.

But it was held up after contractor Pat Munro faced delays with the supply and delivery of the street furniture items which include benches, bollards and directional signage.

There was also a supply issue with the ekki hardwood cladding.

There were then hopes it would be completed by Christmas but there was still some outstanding work to be finished when the festive break began.

This included landscaping work and handrail and guardrail installation as well as the completion of the final section of new fence line and gate as well as tidying up of the site entrance.

Mark Smith, contracts manager at Pat Munro, thanked everyone for their ongoing patience.

“Work is still ongoing to complete the Raigmore Active Travel Link but we hope to be in a position to open this new path to the public by the end of January.

“Some delays have been experienced due to supply chain issues but the project is in its final phase of completion.”

Work on the travel link began in April last year.

It will go from the Raigmore estate and existing Golden Bridge to the Raigmore Interchange and form part of the Inverness City Active Travel Network.

The route will allow access to Inverness Shopping Park from the interchange via Inverness Campus, removing the need for those walking, wheeling or cycling to cross busy roads.

The travel link has been designed to have a Z-type layout to provide a gentler incline and is 4m wide to allow easy access to pedestrians, cyclists, wheelers and mobility scooters.

The scheme also includes a guardrail, a continuous handrail, path lighting, signage and seating.

There will also be a significant landscaping scheme involving the planting of more than 4000 shrubs and 465 trees of various sizes in the woodland and on embankment slopes.

Anyone who wants further information on the progress of the project should go to the weekly update which is posted on raigmoreactivetravellink.co.uk
