Plans have been submitted to convert existing farm buildings in Drumnadrochit into new maintenance, visitor and educational facilities.

Solarsanctuary Ltd, which is based at The Old Schoolhouse in Bunloit, has submitted a planning application to Highland Council for permission to carry out the project.

The site, which covers an area of 3050 square metres, is at Easter Bunloit on the Bunloit Farm and the farm steadings use was described as sheep husbandry.

According to the application’s supporting information the Bunloit Estate is in the process of implementing land use and management changes that will increase carbon sequestration; involve the local community; and re-establish native flora and fauna.

The report states: “As part of this, the agricultural buildings at Bunloit Farm will be altered and refurbished to suit a variety of uses by maintenance staff, public visitors and small educational groups.

“The existing buildings are 19th- century vernacular farm steadings; single storey, stone-walled and slate roofed, arranged around a courtyard. The modifications required for the new uses are limited and the overall character and appearance of the building group will be retained.

“Vehicular and pedestrian access will be from the existing metalled estate access road that joins the Bunloit public road 1k north of the farm site. In line with the estate’s policy of reducing carbon emissions, vehicle access will be discouraged and most visitors and users will arrive by foot.”
