Expansion plans for Eden Court Theatre in Inverness have moved closer with Highland councillors approving a £30,000 grant for a feasibility study.

Theatre bosses are exploring the possibility of expanding the venue’s Empire Theatre to accommodate an additional 300 audience members, bringing its capacity to 1340.

They maintain it would help to attract world-class performers and blockbuster shows and improve the theatre’s financial sustainability.

The project is at the very early stages and following an initial study, Highland Council's environment, development and infrastucture committee today approved a grant for further feasibility work into the necessary redevelopment, refurbishment and change-of-use to facilities at the A-listed building.

Councillor Ian Cockburn, SNP representative for Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, supported the request.

"The sooner that Eden Court is able to put itself on a profit-making basis the better it will be for the theatre and the better it will be for the council," he said.

"Financial issues have been dragging on but no one underestimates the importance of the Highlands leading arts venue.

"We very much hope that this investment will pave the way for the upgrades the theatre needs so that it can enjoy an untroubled and stable future."
