Friends and colleagues of a popular hotel doorman are raising cash for the hospice which is looking after him.

Staff at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness took on the 555 Challenge on Sunday to support Charlie Murray after he was admitted to Highland Hospice.

The 555 Challenge encourages supporters to walk, cycle or run five miles and donate £5 to the hospice – then ask five friends to do the same.

Mr Murray is a long-standing member of the hotel team and his workmates are all committed to raising money because of the amazing care he is receiving.

General manager Kenny MacMillan said: “Charlie has been a staple at Drumossie for the past 15 years.

“He has, undoubtedly, a huge wealth of knowledge and expertise in the hospitality industry that is second to none, and we are very proud of him being part of our family here at the hotel.

“If you have ever attended any of our prestigious dinners or awards ceremonies, you will be sure to have been greeted by Charlie. Proudly standing at the banqueting entrance in his kilt to warmly welcome you and your guests to the Drumossie, to ensure the warmest Highland greeting awaits you.

“His presence is synonymous with all our events and a welcome that many of our regular guests come to recognise.

“Charlie is so fondly thought of by our team here, and former colleagues have also offered support through this challenging time for him and his family, which shows how well he is thought of. We have lots of exciting things planned to help fundraise for the hospice.”

Mr Murray said he was “forever grateful” for the kindness and care he had received from the nurses and staff at Highland Hospice.

The team there have even created a temporary sign for the “Macdonald Drumossie Suite”.

A former cruise ship purser and senior hotel manager on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, he said: “My time at the hotel allowed me to meet a very mixed collection of exceptionally interesting and fascinating people who could ‘spin a good yarn’ and ‘get the craic going’.

“I also would not be getting through this cruel disease without the support of my darling daughters Sarah and Catherine.”
