A 20-YEAR-OLD Inverness man who drove while disqualified twice in four weeks has been placed under a restriction of liberty order for the next eight months as an alternative to being jailed.

Rory Smith, of Smithton Park, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court for sentence after previously admitting both offences which occurred on March 30 and April 24, 2020.

He had also pleaded guilty to possession of a small amount of herbal cannabis. It was discovered by police during a routine search following Smith being stopped for the earlier offence.

Defence solicitor Clare Russell said: “He was eligible to apply for the return of his licence when these offences took place.

“But due to the Covid epidemic, the DVLA was closed and he took a chance.”

Sheriff Frazer also placed Smith under two years of social work supervision and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.

Smith, who was banned from driving for four years, must remain in his home between the hours of 7pm and 7am until the end of the year.

Sheriff Frazer added: “This is an alternative to custody.

“The first offence was bad enough, the second was inexcusable.”
