A motorist was annoyed by another car “tailgating” him as he drove into an Inverness housing estate.

So Struan Mackenzie (21) of Aignish Drive, Inverness, stopped his van on the morning of December 11, 2021 to complain.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard police witnessed the confrontation and stopped to make sure everything was OK.

Officers smelled alcohol on Mackenzie’s breath and a test revealed he was almost three times the legal limit with a reading of 62mcgs of alcohol when the limit is 22mcgs.

He admitted driving with excess alcohol, was fined £320 and banned from driving for a year.

Sheriff Sara Matheson said he was suitable for the drink-drive rehabilitation scheme which, if successfully completed, will earn him a 25 per cent discount on his disqualification.

Solicitor advocate Neil Wilson said: “It is a classic case of the morning after the night before. He will not lose his employment as a result though.”
