Police found a drink-driver asleep in his car on the driveway of his home in Auldearn.

Just minutes earlier, 61-year-old Robert Prosser had bought a half bottle of vodka from a Nairn shop before driving back to his house in Forres Road.

But staff at the store realised when he came in that he was intoxicated and challenged him about it when he got into his vehicle.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Prosser was asked where he was going and he replied: “Auldearn.”

It was then reported to the police who traced him within 10 minutes of the call.

Fiscal depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh said: “The engine was running, the lights were on and he appeared to be asleep in the driver’s seat.”

Prosser admitted driving on the A96 Nairn to Forres road on January 17 when he was four times the legal alcohol limit. He also admitted a previous conviction in 2014 for being in charge of a car after drinking.

His reading was 87mcgs when the limit is 22mcgs.

Defence solicitor Graham Mann said: “It was the first time in a long time that he had taken a drink.”

Sheriff Gareth Jones fined Prosser £580 and banned him from driving for 32 months.
