A man who stole a vehicle then crashed it was nearly seven times over the legal drink-drive limit at the time Inverness Sheriff Court has heard.

Joseph Stewart, of Romach Road, Forres, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court from custody to admit the theft of the vehicle from Merryton Crescent, Nairn, on January 14, last year.

He also admitted driving carelessly on the A96 at Delnies and on an unclassified road to Midcoul Farm, Dalcross.

He admitted driving erratically and at excessive speed, failing to maintain proper lane discipline, clipping a verge, colliding with another car, passing vehicles on the inside and leaving the carriageway and landing in a ditch.

Stewart (27) gave a reading of 154mcgs of alcohol per 100mls of breath when breathalysed.

The legal limit is 22mcgs.

Sheriff Chris Dickson ordered him to be remanded in custody until February 24 for the preparation of background reports.
