He appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court via video link from HMP Addiewell to plead guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner and assault.

Sheriff Gary Aitken told him: “Spitting on the the face of your mother-in-law under her right eye is disgusting.”

He sentenced Potter to 15 months in prison and imposed a non-harassment order for 18 months, preventing him from contacting his victims.

As is standard the order refers to a “partner or ex partner”.

Potter exclaimed to the court that he was still in a relationship with the complainer.

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said: “He would like to apologise to his long-term partner and mother-in-law.

“The day in question was probably due to a psychotic episode.”
