A GROUNDBREAKING digital technology campus in Inverness is celebrating its first batch of graduates.

CodeClan, Scotland’s digital skills academy, this year opened its first study centre in the city with assistance from Highlands and Islands Enterprise. It has run similar campuses in Edinburgh and Glasgow since 2015, with a focus on programming and coding.

The first seven graduates came through a three-month full stack development course. Already, three of the seven have received job offers, while the rest have had second interviews for vacancies. One student was head-hunted before graduating.

The seven students received an immersive introduction to full-stack web development, using Ruby and JavaScript programming languages, as well as a focus on teamwork, agile methodology, test-driven development, user experience, careers advice and mental wellbeing.

Inverness head of campus Susan Considine said: “It has been very exciting to see the first graduates in Inverness and to help all our students progress to fulfilling jobs with their newly gained digital skills. I’m delighted to say that all students are now fully-qualified web developers and we’ll be following their careers with interest in years to come.”

Inverness CodeClan graduate Julie Atherton said: “I signed up to CodeClan as I needed to broaden my skills and wanted to see what other companies and roles were out there. I wanted to go somewhere that would be really supportive and friendly, and wouldn’t mind if I asked lots of questions. The last three months have been so encouraging. CodeClan has given me the confidence and skills to progress in my next job.”

CodeClan Highlands is part of the Northern Innovation Hub (NIH), an HIE project that received £11m from the UK Government and £1.7m European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) support as part of the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal.
