THE hard work of an Inverness apprentice has been recognised with a top digital learning award.

Highland Council digital support officer John Greig was named 2020 apprentice of the year in the awards programme run by the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA).

The IT and telecoms staff apprentice picked up his trophy and certificate at Highland Council headquarters last week from VLA consultant Roy MacKenzie and business manager Louise Wheeler.

His prize also included two vouchers for Inverness Kartway.

Paying tribute to his outstanding efforts Mhairi Quinn, Mr Greig’s learning consultant, said: “John achieved his SCQF 6 through his hard work and dedication, and did so in an impressive eight months.

“John’s commitment and skills were clearly shown within the outstanding work he produced throughout.

“John showed a willingness to push himself and not take the easy route and produced work to a very high standard in all the subjects that we chose.

“John achieved every deadline set, usually early, and was a pleasure to work with throughout the process.”

Mr Grieg started work with Highland Council in April 2019 on the Youth Trainee (YT) scheme, where he was given the opportunity to work in digital services under the supervision of the council’s digital services manager, Robert Newman.

During his time on the YT programme he was the admitted to the Modern Apprenticeship programme with Virtual Learning Academy for IT and Telecommunications, which he was able to complete within the 12-month timeframe of his YT programme.

He was also named trainee of the year in Highland Council’s own staff awards and has recently been granted the MA post for Digital Support Officer, where Mr Greig will continue to develop in his role.
