There will be a short, socially-distanced, demonstration outside at Raigmore Hospital on Tuesday in support of a pay rise for NHS staff.

It has been organised by the Unison union to allow members to show their anger and upset at the Scottish Government’s refusal to re-open the pay deal for 2019/20.

members are also angered over what they allege is a failure to recognise the huge efforts made by NHS staff in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is part of a series of demonstrations which are planned to take place across the country and the Unison Pay up Now campaign is thanking the public and asking them for their continued support for a NHS pay rise.

The trade union is calling on the Scottish Government to resume the NHS three year pay deal, and for ministers to sit down with the trade unions to discuss a pay rise for all NHS staff.

NHS staff have been working long hours and many report being mentally and physically exhausted and the union described their response to this pandemic as "heroic".

Tom Waterson, chairman of Unison Scotland health committee, said: “Unison are organising socially distanced demonstrations across Scotland on Tuesday to show the strength of feeling of NHS staff about pay.

"The public support for our heroic NHS workers throughout this pandemic has been amazing. Thursday night clapping was hugely appreciated by health workers across the UK.

"However the reality is that NHS workers have seen their pay eroded over the past decade and some NHS staff are amongst the lowest paid in Scotland. So please continue your support for NHS workers. They deserve it.”

"The demonstration at Raigmore will be a short event, strictly socially-distanced, and with a clap to support the NHS and demand a decent pay rise."
