AN ambitious plan to transform a key part of Inverness city centre is facing a funding D-Day.

Highland Council needs money from Sustrans, the national sustainable transport organisation, to help make its £7.2 million vision for the Academy Street area a reality, and the grant application deadline is May 1. The money from Sustrans would pay for detailed design work and consultation.

The Inverness area committee meets on Thursday and members will be asked to approve a plan for the street, which includes widening pavements, reducing traffic speeds and making the area more pedestrian-friendly.

The Accessing Inverness project was first unveiled in November, but council officers were sent back to the drawing board three months later amid concerns over the potential impact on disabled and visually-impaired people.
