An 87-year-old crofter who had several trays of eggs stolen from the entrance to her Daviot farm, has thanked people for their support.

Joan Grant, who sells eggs from the gate of her farm at Daviot using an honesty box system, said that she has been overwhelmed with the generosity of strangers, after the Courier highlighted the theft.

Mrs Grant has sold eggs from her croft for more than 20 years with only a handful of occasions when people have stolen from her.

In this instance two men in a grey car drove up to the croft, lifted the eggs and drove off before she could get to them.

“Since the article appeared in the newspaper I have had a reaction that I would not have expected,” she said. “People have been leaving extra money in the honesty box and asking if they can help me around the croft.

“I am so grateful for all the help and support I have received – but it is now time for it to stop.”

Mrs Grant, who keeps 200 chickens, added: “There is very little profit margin being a crofter, it’s more of a labour of love and a way of life.”

Inverness South councillor Duncan Macpherson said: “Lots of people have been in touch to offer help to Mrs Grant, it is good news to see a positive out of this situation that would see anyone steal from an 87-year-old crofter.

“It is good to see all the good there is in the world.”
