Dragons, castles and coffee were the highlight of a community event organised by Nairn Museum.

Ahead of its seasonal closure, the museum team held the coffee morning at Nairn Community and Arts Centre.

Models and drawings of castles made by local schoolchildren were on display, with a prize presentation also forming part of the proceedings.

The competition was organised by Nairn Museum in conjunction with its final exhibition of 2023, which focussed on local castles and stately homes,

Children from Nairnshire primary schools drew inspiration from such places as Cawdor Castle, Kilravock Castle, Rait Castle and Inshoch which were among the homes and ruins on display in various forms at Viewfield House.

Visitors and volunteers at the museum voted for their favourite model and drawing.

Nairn Museum chairman Iain Bain said he was delighted with the response to the competition challenge and the success of the coffee morning. “It was great to see the way in which the children interacted with the content of our exhibition, both in the number and quality of the entries and the variety of ways they perceived the theme of castles," he said.

“The coffee morning has raised more than £1100. There was a tremendous attendance and I would thank all who came along to support the museum and our volunteers who put on the event.

"We also had great support from the local business community who came as stall holders and contributed to the raffles. Asher’s made a very generous donation of scones and pancakes for which we were very grateful.

“We didn’t actually plan it this way but the last couple of weeks of our 2023 season have been spectacular in terms of fundraising.

"Dave Godden, who staged his concert at the community centre on behalf of the museum, has given us the entire proceeds of the event.

"We are still counting but so far the concert has raised well over £2000 for our funds.”

Rosebank Primary School dominated the prize list with the winning model of a castle constructed by P6 classmates Shea Milne, Finlay and Calum Morton and Max Murchison.

They were awarded £10 vouchers each with £100 also going to school funds.

Other winning artists included Andreea Gheoca, Mason Tuffnell and Lily Gallagher.
