FEWER people are receiving treatment for Covid-19 in NHS Highland hospitals than at any point in the past six weeks.

The region’s hospitals were treating 21 people for the virus last night – down five from yesterday, and the lowest total since January 13.

The number of people in intensive care also fell by one, to six.

The figures came as six additional positive tests for Covid-19 were identified across the NHS Highland area in the past day.

The region’s cumulative number of cases rose from 4615 to 4621 when Friday’s update was announced.

Across Scotland, some 581 positive tests were recorded in the past 24 hours. This represented 3.3 per cent of tests during that window.

Nine-hundred and twenty four people were receiving treatment for the virus in hospital last night – a fall of 43 from yesterday’s Scottish figure.

Of those, 80 were in intensive care. This was down nine.

And, sadly, a further 27 deaths have been recorded among people who had Covid-19.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new positive tests in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

NHS Grampian’s total increased to 13,422 following 19 additional positive tests.

And there were 29 new cases in NHS Tayside, which saw its overall tally rise to 13,084.

More than 1.54 million people have now received their first dose of the vaccine – an increase of 26,949. And a further 8,679 people were given their second jag in the past 24 hours.
