INVERNESS SHERIFF COURT ROUND-UP: Rapist who faked own death has more time added to sentence over offence

Its been another busy week at Inverness Sheriff Court and at courts elsewhere. Here are just some of the cases to make the headlines in the past seven days…


Rapist Kim Avis has two months added to 15 year sentence after prison offence

An Inverness rapist who faked his own death to avoid justice and was later jailed for 15 years has had two months added to his sentence.

Kim Avis, who was a market trader in the Highland capital, was sentenced to the additional two months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week after being convicted of having a personal communication device on him in prison.

Avis has been jailed since his 2021 conviction for rape, sexual abuse and for going on the run after faking his own death.

Bitten-off piece of nose found in garden after fight

Police recovered a piece of a man's nose from his garden after it was bitten off by an Inverness man in a fight.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that 20-year-old Thomas Stewart of Longman Caravan Site, bit off part of Colin Reid’s nose during the struggle on September 1, 2023.

A background report had previously been prepared, after Stewart pleaded guilty to a charge of assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Man told police officers they would be getting ‘a cartel death’ after they arrested him

A Highland man told Inverness police officers that they would be getting ‘a cartel death’ after they arrested him for kicking-off at the Coop.

Malcolm Watson (38) shouted and swore at security workers and staff inside the Church Street shop before he was ushered out by an off-duty security staff member on December 29, 2023.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Watson then hit the female security staff after she had pulled him out of the shop and an off-duty, plain-clothed police officer ran over to help restrain him.

Inverness man who went out to celebrate birth of new baby ended night getting arrested

A man who was on a work-do and celebrating the birth of his baby ended his night out by getting arrested.

Lee Macleod (34) was fined after he shouted and swore at his taxi driver on the way home from the Kingsmills Hotel before kicking the vehicle.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Macleod then told police officers to ‘f***-off’ after they were called on November 9, 2024.
