Highland Council is considering a rent rise for tenants.

Councillors are being asked to approve a three per cent rise in rents for council homes across Highland.

Highland Council expects to make just under £2.4 million more in income if the increase for almost 14,000 properties is approved.

The rise is to be considered by the housing and property committee today.

If backed by them it will then go on to be considered by the full council as part of this year’s budget discussions.

The rise would affect all council-owned residential properties as well as Gypsy and Traveller site pitches.

A report prepared for the housing and property committee meeting says that, over the last five years, Highland Council rents have been increasing at a much lower rate than nationally or compared to those imposed by housing associations in the area.
