Householders in Inverness and the rest of the Highlands can now use oversized trailers at waste recycling centres after a change was made to a newly introduced policy.

The vehicle restrictions applied to residents using Highland Council's Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and were introduced at the beginning of last month.

The minor amendment was made today at a meeting of the full council after residents complained that the restrictions, which were aimed at stopping trade waste, discriminated against them.

It will now allow householders with oversized trailers to continue to use the centres to dispose of their household garden waste, electrical appliances and furniture only with immediate effect.

However, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes or greater; tippers and flat-bed trucks of any weight and plant vehicles will still not permitted at HWRCs and construction and demolition waste restrictions will still apply.

Inverness South councillor Andrew Jarvie had pushed for the change because it discriminated against genuine householders.

Speaking after today's decision, he said: "Common sense has prevailed and the correct decision was made. Ultimately, this comes down to a badly written report.

"I am not a member of the committee which made the decision, but I still read the reports and the wording did not suggest to me that genuine householders would be prohibited from using trailers.

"The report was clearly contradictory by stating household waste would not be subject to restrictions."
