THREE fresh coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the Highlands – taking its overall tally to 310.

The slight rise comes amid 272 freshly-confirmed cases across Scotland as a whole. Since the pandemic began 12,437 people have tested positive for the virus.

The death toll among those people who have tested positive for Covid-19 also rose by 83 to 1703. The true death toll and number of infections are both believed to be much higher.

In the NHS Highland area, 88 people are now confirmed to have died from the virus. The figure comes amid a growing death toll at the Home Farm care home on Skye, which recorded its fifth fatality this afternoon.

However the number of people being treated in NHS Highland hospitals continues to stay low following yesterday's sharp fall. Only 13 people with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 were receiving treatment in hospital at midnight last night, up just two from Tuesday's tally and down from 44 on Monday.

The fall in hospitalised patients was reflected across the country. Only 89 people were in intensive care in Scotland last night (down from 104), while the number of people with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 receiving hospital treatment also dropped from 1656 to 1632.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were once again no newly-reported cases of coronavirus on the Northern Isles or in the Outer Hebrides.

NHS Grampian recorded only 11 new cases, to take its overall number to 957. Some 94 people were receiving hospital treatment for the virus, 11 of whom were in intensive care. Both figures are down slightly on yesterday's tallies.

And NHS Tayside recorded 16 new cases to take its overall number of positive tests to 1445. Forty-seven people were receiving hospital treatment for suspected or confirmed coronavirus at midnight – up three on Tuesday.
