A Nairn group has brought a new floral look to the town thanks to a collaboration with Highland Council.

Keeping Nairnshire Colourful (KNC) has worked hard to replant the flower bed along King Street and Claymore Gardens – opposite the new CAB building.

This was made possible thanks to a partnership of KNC chairwoman Annie Stewart and Mick Haymer, the council’s amenities officer in Nairn, as well as money from the Nini Isobel Stewart Trust – which was wound up and saw more than £400 given to local causes as a result.

After the council’s grounds team cleared the bed, KNC members and volunteers added plants.

Ms Stewart, who designed the planting plan, said: “It had to be a low maintenance design with a mix of shrubs and perennials providing all-year interest to make it easy for the council’s grounds team to look after in the future.

"Almost all the plants have been provided by Greens Nurseries and we owe them a debt of gratitude for all their help.”

Once the bed was planted KNC provided fine bark as a mulch to cover the gaps between the plants and suppress the worst of the weeds – supplied by Inverness Bark at Gollanfield, who are sponsoring the bed.

The grounds team will keep the flower bed watered during the rest of the year and KNC will monitor the progress of the new plants.

Ms Stewart said they hope to add more plants in due course.

She said: “We hope this joint project will brighten up the main route through the town for many years to come. It will take a while for everything to fill out and cover the ground."
