Glen Urquhart Shinty Club in Drumnadrochit secures a 99-year lease for the field and pavilion at Blairbeg Park from Glen Urquhart Rural Community Association

One of the Highlands’ oldest shinty clubs has secured its home ground for the next 99 years.

Glen Urquhart Shinty Club, in Drumnadrochit, made the announcement along with Glen Urquhart Rural Community Association (GURCA).

The agreement has been reached on a formal 99-year lease for the field and pavilion at Blairbeg Park.

GURCA, as current owner of Blairbeg Park, has entrusted the stewardship of the site.

It follows on from a previous 25-year lease and Garry Mackintosh, the club’s chairman, said: “We are delighted to confirm Blairbeg Park as the home of Glen Urquhart Shinty Club (GUSC) for the foreseeable future.

“We are humbled and encouraged by the vote of confidence given to us by GURCA trustees and members for the long-term management and care of the facilities.”

He said the club wanted to thank the chairwoman and trustees of GURCA for their time and patience working through the draft agreement over the past nine months.

Susan Clark, the GURCA chairwoman, said: “As a result of the unanimous vote by GURCA members, in favour of entering into a long-term lease between GURCA and GUSC, we are extremely happy that we have been able to put in place a relationship which the important part that shinty plays in our community while protecting Blairbeg Park for use by the whole community.

“This agreement provides a solid foundation for us working together collaboratively in the future for the benefit of Glen Urquhart.”

The club was established in 1884 and draws its players from the part of the Great Glen which encompasses an area which includes Drumnadrochit, Lewiston and Glenurquhart.
