CASH-strapped Highland Council will have to fork out up to £30,000 for a by-election to find a new councillor for the Inverness Central ward.

It comes after SNP representative Richard Laird announced that he is to resign his seat next week due to health reasons.

A council spokeswoman said: “We are currently considering the best options for the date but it is likely to be sometime in November.

“Once we have the election date agreed we will release the timetable including nomination period and other details. The returning officer is chief executive Donna Manson and by-elections cost around £20,000 to £30,000, depending on the number of polling stations.”
