Police in Inverness are set to target speeding ‘rat run’ drivers plaguing residents in a narrow riverside street.

Officers from the Inverness city centre policing team will carry out enforcement activity at Douglas Row to deter drivers from using it as a shortcut.

The move follows complaints from householders that drivers were ignoring ‘no motor vehicles, except for access’ signs in an effort to avoid queues at the Chapel Street traffic lights.

Sergeant Neal Irving said: “These restrictions are in place for a reason and we will be carrying out patrols in the area to both deter drivers from breaking the rules and to enforce the legislation.

“Road safety continues to remain a priority for Police Scotland and we will continue to work with our partners and take action to improve road safety.

“We ask anyone who has concerns about other road users to report it to us on 101."

The Courier reported recently how Douglas Row residents feared someone would be injured or worse if no action was taken to curb peak time speeders ignoring a 20mph limit.

They petitioned Crown and City Centre Community Council (CCCC), calling for action at the single lane, one-way street between Glebe Street to Bank Street.

Douglas Row, with little or no pavement space, is often used by pedestrians and cyclists, as well as residents on foot.

The residents have called for clearer signage to be installed and have asked police and Highland Council to work together to reduce the problem.
