Yesterday Inverness City Centre Police team, working alongside road policing colleagues and Highland Council enforcement officers carried out checks of vehicles in Bridge Street, Inverness.

It was in response to complaints from members of the public regarding vehicles failing to comply with the red traffic signals in Bank Street.

Sergeant Chris Murray, from the City Centre Policing team, said: “Drivers who fail to comply with the red traffic signal on Bank Street and turn left onto Bridge street risk a collision with pedestrians using the crossing.

"Pedestrians will not expect a car to come through on the green man phase of the lights. We have seen limited traffic using the city centre recently but as spaces for people measures are being reduced we need drivers to be alert to changes within the city centre."

Shane Manning, Highland Council’s principal traffic management and control officer said: “The Highland Council is ready to support Police Scotland’s enforcement action in relation to ‘red light running’ at traffic signals.

"This is a problem that our officers are acutely aware of as an issue that can lead to serious injury to road users at signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings. We will be supporting the police’s clear enforcement message to drivers that taking these unnecessary risks is unacceptable.”
