A charity has been forced to cancel an annual fundraising run at Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre due to a lack of participants.

Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland said the cost of living crisis and rising costs had led to a drop in entries for the Culloden Run which was set to take place on Sunday October 23.

The event has been held for over 10 years but the charity was struggling to get enough participants to make this year’s event profitable.

It believes rising costs are having an impact on fundraising events as it saw a big fall in entries for this year’s event compared to previous years.

Lawrence Cowan, director of fundraising at Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, said: "We're gutted to have to make the very difficult decision to cancel the Culloden Run.

"Due to the cost of living crisis and rising costs, we’ve seen a big fall in entries for this race and unfortunately we didn’t have enough participants for the entry fees to cover the costs.

"With running events like this, there are lots of costs involved to make the event happen and so it’s the profit made from the event that funds our vital work to help people with chest, heart and stroke conditions across the country live their lives to the full."

He said the charity had tried everything to make the event work and left it as long as possible to see if entries would pick up.

"We’re so sorry to all our participants, supporters and everyone who makes this event what it is every year," he said.

"Being able to run events like the Culloden Run is really important to us and the people we help.

"During this cost of living crisis, people with our conditions need our help more than ever. They’re leaving hospital feeling scared and alone but with your continued support we can be there for them during this difficult time.

"We hope participants understand this tough decision and if anyone has any questions or wants to speak to us please get in touch by emailing fundraising@chss.org.uk."
