Staff at an Inverness care home have paid fond tribute to a resident, who was among Scotland’s oldest people, following her death aged 105.

Agnes Williams was a resident at the Isobel Fraser Residential Home where the former secretary and accountant was remembered for making people smile as well as always being busy and tidying up the office.

She previously lived in North Kessock and leaves a son, James, and daughter, Edna, plus two granddaughters and two great grandchildren.

Kara Mackay and Janet Hocking, of the home’s senior care team, are among those who have fond memories of Mrs Williams.

“Over the years, Agnes had made thousands of memories, friends and cherished laughter, and will be a name that is special to many who have had the privilege of meeting her and being in her warm presence,” they said.

They said since she entered the care of the home in January 2017, she had put smiles onto the faces of everyone she had met, and after her passing on July 14 at the remarkable age of 105 years old, her name and memories still brought smiles to everyone.

“Agnes always liked to be busy and was always on the go,” they said.

“Agnes often came into the office and was tidying things up.

“Agnes was a joy to care for and will be missed, but we will all think of her and smile.”

They reflected that Mrs Williams, who was born in 1916, had lived through two pandemics, remembered the fall of Hitler at the end of World War II and the days when Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley were on the radio and TV.

“But we all at Isobel Fraser had the honour and privilege of meeting Agnes Williams and being a part in her end chapter in her book,” they said.

Mrs Williams, who was born in Clydebank, left school at 14 and started working in a Glasgow office before taking night classes in bookkeeping.

A friend and neighbour in Glasgow introduced her to her husband, James, who was from Inverness, and the couple were married in December 1945.

Mr Williams died in 1997.

Mrs Williams was well known in North Kessock where she was part of a local history group and she also belonged to a botany group in Inverness.

She had also enjoyed hill walking with her husband.

She was still emailing friends at the age of 98 and it was only in the last 10 months she had been unable to walk.

Her funeral was due to be held at Tore Cemetery today.
