Highland Council's garden waste collections resumed for the current season last week for residents who have brown bin permits.

And householders will pay less than expected next season after councillors agreed a lower than expected price rise – the cost of a garden waste permit covering September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022, will increase by only £1.35 (three per cent) to £46.35 instead of the previously agreed £5 annual increase.

Collections got off to a good start which was helped by the warm spring weather.

Householders who live in a brown bin catchment area and who have bought a permit for the 2020/21 season – which runs from September 1 last year until August 31 this year – are reminded to put their brown bins out for collection after checking here for collection dates.

Permits for this season are still available to buy for £45 per bin and customers can purchase up to three permits per household.

Councillor Allan Henderson, the chairman of the Communities and Place Committee, said: “We recognise that households are continuing to face financial challenges due to the on-going Covid pandemic so I am pleased that at our budget setting meeting last week we agreed to reduce the cost to householders.

“By continuing to use the garden waste recycling service, residents will be doing their bit for the environment as well as helping the council to reduce costs from landfilling waste.”

The fortnightly collection service is easy and convenient to use and accepts a wide range of garden material including grass cuttings, leaves, hedge clippings, weeds, flowers, plants and small branches.

Customers are advised to visit the council’s website to check they live in a brown bin collection area and to buy permits – which can also be bought by calling the Highland Council’s Service Centre on 01349 886660.

The service is optional, and householders are also able to take their garden waste along to their local Recycling Centre free of charge.
