BREAKING: Union Street in Inverness closed to traffic as firefighters send two appliances after reports of smoke coming from building

Emergency services are at the scene of an incident in Inverness city centre, and Union Street has been closed off.

Two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances were sent to the scene after reports of smoke coming from a four-storey building on Academy Street just before 4pm.

The appliances are on Union Street and firefighters seen entering the Old Royal Guest House — near Harry Gow’s bakery and other businesses — earlier this afternoon.

The street has been closed to traffic; however, the nature of the incident is unknown at the time of writing.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 3.53pm on Wednesday, 2 July, to reports of smoke coming from a four-storey building on Academy Street, Inverness.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene.

"Crews remain at the scene."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
