A COMMUNITY push to help a Black Isle mum raise £60,000 to erect a purpose-built care pod for her sick son has reached a major milestone after the latest local event.

Donna Mitchell has paid tribute to the support of people to help her six-year-old son Reece who has a rapidly progressing form variant of the condition Batten disease. The condition, for which there is no cure, has robbed Reece of his ability to walk, talk or see.

A breakfast with Santa event in her home village of North Kessock in the run-up to Christmas helped add another £1400 to the tally, bring the running total to just shy of £45,000 – or three-quarters of the total. She hopes the pod – which will be a modular building capable of being lifted in to her garden – could be in place early in the new year.

The most recent event in the village’s community hall offered folk an opportunity to show their support and give the fund another big push before Christmas.

All of the tickets for the festive event were sold with children and their families joining Reece and his loved ones for a fun-filled morning of entertainment and solidarity.

Ms Mitchell said: “It’s so nice to see the whole community pulling together. The money being raised is fantastic but the main thing is the precious memories being made. This could be Reece’s last Christmas and those memories are just priceless.”

She said that while Reece is facing huge health challenges, he was able to enjoy the event in his own way. She said: “Unfortunately Reece des not understand what is going on around him but he did enjoy himself in his own wee way. No amount of money can replace these precious memories. For him at the moment no two days are ever the same.”
