THERE are reports from Californian police hunting for Inverness street trader Kim Gordon that a body has been found around 70 miles away from the beach where he allegedly went swimming.

The 55-year-old, also known as Kim or Kem Avis, failed to appear at the High Court in Edinburgh last week to face 24 charges including rape and sexual assault on a child in Scotland.

A search was launched for Gordon after he was reported missing while swimming at Monastery Beach in Carmel at the end of February.

The body has been found on a stretch of coastline.

He was reported missing by his 17-year-old son who said his dad had gone for a swim.

But police confirmed they had found a body at Salmon Creek on Sunday.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office said a post-mortem would be carried out and that formal identification had not taken place.

Captain John Thornburg, of Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, said: "We are trying to figure out who it is.

"At this stage we have no indication that it could be Mr Avis, but we have no indication that it is not him.

"We are working to identify the body."

US police said when the hunt started that they believed Gordon had not gone into the sea, and believed he had staged his disappearance.

Gordon’s son told detectives he had gone hiking while his father went for a swim before being reported missing.
