The 'emergency' early closure of the Victorian Market in Inverness on Saturday was due to a bird's nest, it has emerged.

We reported that two eateries had flagged to customers that the venue would be closing sooner than expected while Highland Council launched an investigation.

The venue is usually open to 8pm on Saturdays and the council's Inverness city area manager David Haas stressed the move was a precaution measure.

One of the eateries, Sushi Inverness, stated: "Apologies but we're closing just now for the rest of the evening. There is an emergency at the Victorian Market Inverness."

Another of the businesses in the food zone, The Redshank, stated: "Unfortunately due to circumstances out of our control we have had to shut early at the Victorian Market, Inverness. We are so sorry to disappoint anyone who had planned a visit this evening."

This morning, a council spokeswoman said: “The council apologises to the public and the businesses within the Victorian Market for the necessary closure of the Victorian Market food hall for a short period on Saturday afternoon.

"This was due to the need to remove a bird's nest in order to prevent interference with the operation of the Victorian Market food hall. We would like to thank everyone for their consideration and co-operation and are pleased to advise that the market reopened as usual on Sunday morning.”

She added: "The nest was within the roof space and did involve the removal of nest material on the outside of the roof space."
