A GROUP of bikers marked the centenary of the end of WWI as they took part in a wreath-laying ceremony in Inverness last week.

Widows Sons Scotland, a bikers’ group consisting of Freemasons from the Grand Lodge of Scotland, have been visiting cenotaphs and war memorials around the country.

They are laying wreaths at 31 locations around Scotland as part of a drive to raise £60,000 for veterans’ charity Poppyscotland.

The money raised will help to provide tailored employment support and facilities for veterans living across the north.

The latest leg of the group’s nationwide tour was supported by the Provincial Grand Lodge of Inverness-shire, with local lodges providing accommodation and hospitality for the fundraisers.

Poppyscotland’s head of fundraising Gordon Michie says the funds will prove vital in improving veterans’ lives.

"The money raised by the Grand Lodge of Scotland and their motorcycle association Widows Sons Scotland will improve lives in the Armed Forces community," he said.

"I would like to thank them for their wonderful work. It is greatly appreciated.

"It will fund a specialised employment service so that disabled veterans can get support to find suitable, sustainable employment, or allow us to undertake major home adaptations, enabling a seriously disabled veteran to remain in the comfort and safety of their own home."

Poppyscotland has previously estimated that there could be around 100,000 ex-service personnel living in the Highlands.

Charles Iain Robert Wolrige Gordon, Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, said: "We are delighted Widows Sons Scotland tour of the country is raising vital money for Poppyscotland and that it will help facilitate its much-needed work.

"The bravery of our Armed Forces, both serving men and women as well as veterans, is something to be very proud of and we’re honoured to support an excellent charity that recognizes their invaluable contribution."
