July 2013: First section of controversial Beauly to Denny overhead power line goes live.

A decade after the project to upgrade the 137-mile transmission line began, the Beauly to Fort Augustus section went live.

Energy giant SSE maintained the replacement of the 132kV to a 400 kV line was necessary to carry renewable energy generated in the north to markets in the south.

Although opponents argued the 600 new towers soaring up to 213ft would blot the landscape, the Scottish government approved the project in 2010 following a 10-month public inquiry.

The legacy of a Highland news photographer - tribute to Gary Anthony

This image forms part of an online retrospective series, Behind The Lens: The Legacy of a Highland news photographer, being run by the Inverness Courier in tribute to Gary who died in August 2023, aged 58.
