As tributes pour in following the death of Highland baker Harry Gow aged 89, we republish these photographs in honour of a man known for quality, tradition, and community spirit.

And as these images depict, the man known as the creator of the renowned Dream Ring was keen to encourage the next generation of bakers.

They were taken in February 2020 as pupils from Duncan Forbes and Smithton primary schools rolled up their sleeves and took part in some sticky challenges at the Harry Gow Bakery to launch the search for the Scottish Baker of the Year.

They form part of our online retrospective series, Behind The Lens: The Legacy of a Highland news photographer, highlighting the work of Highland News & Media photographer Gary Anthony who died in August 2023, aged 58.

The photographs taken as the pupils enthusiastically joined in a Generation Game-style contest to put the finishing touches to the famous Dream Rings, also demonstrate that Harry Gow was a man who knew how to have fun while inspiring potential bakers of the future.

The Behind the Lens series celebrates the talent and versatility of Gary Anthony as well as evoking memories of the many stories he covered in our community.

Although an unassuming and modest person, to thousands across the area, he was the popular and visible face of Highland News & Media – and often recognisable due to his lofty height - capturing moments of history in the making, recording people's triumphs and tragedies and observing day-to-day life.
