THE pie crusts at a popular bakery are golden - and that’s official after it bagged a trio of prizes in the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards.

Ashers Bakery in Nairn picked up a gold and two silver awards in the annual contest after seeing off more than 75 other rival bakers and around 460 individual entries.

Their chicken and haggis pie won gold in the Haggis Savoury category, while their pork and black pudding sausage rolls and the County Pie for Nairn County FC nabbed silvers in the Hot Savoury and Football Pie sections respectively.

George Asher said: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed. To have been judged as one of the best against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”

Head judge, Ian Nelson, who oversaw the judging process to ensure the best pies were recognised, hailed the successful outlets, adding: “I must say that the standard keeps getting better each year. All of our winners deserve the accolades they have taken home.”

Alasdair Smith, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, added: “At Scottish Bakers, our core purpose is to promote and protect the interests of the trade and this competition makes our task simple. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this competition recognising excellence."
