A 49-year-old Inverness man broke the jaw of a former colleague who had been his new girlfriend’s ex-partner.

Martin McEwan’s jaw was broken in two places by Donald Manson, of Birchview Court, and he also sustained cuts to the back of his head.

Manson admitted assaulting Mr McEwan to his severe injury, as well as previous convictions.

Sentence was deferred until March 24 for a background report, and Manson’s personal appearance and his bail was continued by Sheriff Margaret Neilson.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that both men had been drinking in The Keg, in Baron Taylor’s Street, on October 18, 2018 but Mr McEwan did not remember anything after that.

Fiscal depute Alex Swain said: “Mr McEwan knew the accused as he used to work with him. Two to three months prior to this incident, Manson and Mr McEwan’s ex-girlfriend entered into a relationship which caused some hostility between them.”

Around half-an-hour after leaving, Mr McEwan was seen in Telford Avenue lying on the ground with Manson holding him down, Ms Swain said.

She added that Mr McEwan was punched and did not retaliate.

An ambulance was called by witnesses and he was taken to A&E. Mr McEwan told police at the time he remembered seeing Manson in the bar with “his fists clenched”.

The court heard Manson was not arrested until January 30, 2019 and answered only one police question. He claimed he had an identical twin.
