Royal British Legion Industries’ (RBLI) is inviting Armed Forces veterans who live in and around Inverness to join their scheme that helps them find new or different employment.

The free residential Lifeworks employment course will take place in Inverness from 15 to 18 July.

Lifeworks will help veterans who are job hunting, seeking to move from their current job, go into training, or find volunteering opportunities.

The Lifeworks course will take place at the Army Reserve Centre, Gordonville Road, Inverness IV2 4SU. RBLI also needs people who have experience conducting interviews to act as interviewers during the mock interviews that take place with Lifeworks delegates on the final day of the course.

The free employment support programme gives veterans the tools they need to find a job, no matter how long ago they left the services. During the four day course, skills gaps are identified, delegates learn how to write a CV, develop interview skills, adapt to, and overcome change, and set realistic and attainable goals.

At the end of the course people receive an internationally recognised SQA qualification.

Lifeworks success is proven as 80% of veterans went into employment, training, or volunteering within 12 months of completing the course.

The Lifeworks team include life coaches, careers advisors, psychologists, and a careers guidance coach who delivers the vocational assessments. As the course is run by veterans and supported by spouses of serving personnel, they understand the needs of the people who take part.

Two people will deliver the courses. One is Julie Scott who is Training Manager at Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, the Scottish social enterprise arm of RBLI, where road and rail signs are made, and 70% of staff are veterans and people with disabilities.

The other is Tim Brown, Lifeworks Tutor, and Coach, who served in the Royal Engineers and the Adjutant General’s Corps.

Julie Scott said: “We want veterans in Inverness and the surrounding areas to take our Lifeworks course if they are job hunting, looking to find a new job, or go into training or volunteering. The course is free, and we will put delegates up in accommodation so there’s no need to worry about travel.

“We know that it can be difficult to transition to the civilian world, and through Lifeworks, we give veterans the guidance they need to adapt to and overcome change.

“We emphasise just how relevant and transferable the skills they learned in the Armed Forces are to civilian employers and once they realise that it really helps to raise their confidence and self-belief.

“They also really value the peer support from their fellow veterans. We also need people to act as interviewers, as at the end of the four days, we run a series of mock interviews that we find really reinforces everything delegates have learnt during the course.”

At the end of the course, each Lifeworks delegate will receive 12 months post course support when they can access specialist employment advice.
