Announcement of road safety improvements at notorious Munlochy junction on A9 north of Inverness welcomed by Highlands and Islands Labour MSP

The announcement that street lighting is to be installed at the Munlochy junction on the A9 has been welcomed by Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant.

It follows a public consultation considering various improvements on the stretch of trunk road between North Kessock and Tore roundabout.

WSP consultants has published the results containing a list of short, medium and long-term options.

Transport Scotland said street lighting will be installed at the Munlochy junction and it will also review active travel facilities around Tore roundabout as well as the speed limit on the roundabout and all approaches.

Mrs Grant, who has been liaising with Scottish Government officials and their partners in a bid to have safety measures introduced in the area, joined Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch SNP MSP Kate Forbes in welcoming the news.

Mrs Grant said: "Constituents contacted me about the safety of this junction and I have been putting the concerns raised to the Scottish Government and their consultants, WSP.

"While I am pushing for major improvement, I appreciate that will take time so I am pleased that some short term improvements will be introduced in the interim.

"The installation of street lighting is welcome, particularly as we approach the dark nights and dark mornings of the winter months."

Mrs Grant continued: "I will continue to engage with transport officials regarding longer-term improvements but I do welcome this step forward meantime."
