A food-stop beside the A9 just outside Inverness is so busy the owner has applied for planning permission for overflow accommodation - in a large tent.

John Lockhart of the North Gateway Cafe at Daviot Wood on the north-bound carriageway at the top of Drumossie Brae wants to erect the marquee beside the existing cafe building.

The plan is to have the 9m x 9m marquee connected to the building at one of its doorways, forming an additional room with tables and chairs for more customers.

Mr Lockhart was not available for comment but a planning statement accompanying his application from CRGP Architects, Inverness, said the marquee is to provide additional seating for the established business.

The document states also: “The café business requires additional seating to ensure the business can operate appropriately.

“The applicant has confirmed that nothing will be stored in the marquee. No food preparation will take place in the marquee.”

The operating hours of 9.00am to 5pm will not be altered by this development, and it is intended to use the marquee all year round, depending on the weather.

Historic Environment Scotland were consulted and do not have any comments to make on the proposals, although it suggested the council also seek advice from its archaeology and conservation service for matters including unscheduled archaeology.

The application is being considered by planners.
