Four-legged animals were the talk of an Inverness betting shop recently, but not the usual horses or dogs.

What’s the betting rats would be the focus of the punters’ chat but it was, after one of the rodents put in an appearance in the betting area and forced the closure of the premises until pest control operatives took action.

The rat closure at the Ladbrokes premises in Baron Taylor Street was confirmed by a company spokesman.

He said: “Following the sighting, the shop was closed early and pest control attended the shop the next morning and took action to prevent access to the shop by the rodents.

“The shop received a deep clean following the pest control visit, and has been trading normally since then.

“We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the measures taken continue to be effective.”

Highland Council’s environmental health apparently were not called out.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Environmental Health do not hold any records of any involvement with alleged rats or the closure of Ladbrokes premises at Baron Taylor Street in connection with such issues.”

Like other properties in that vicinity Ladbrokes has a cellar beneath the shop and it is understood that earlier this year the betting shop was closed for several weeks following trouble with a sewer pipe.
