Youngsters had a ball at a reading challenge involving all High Life Highland (HLH) libraries.

Julie Corcoran, HLH’s head of libraries, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is an immensely popular and successful reading initiative which is now in its 23rd successful year.

“The Summer Reading Challenge created and operated nationally by The Reading Agency, an independent charity working to inspire people to read more, reaches around 750,000 children aged four to eleven years old across the UK library network.

“For this year, The Reading Agency partnered with Science Museum Group and launched ‘Gadgeteers’, a science and innovation themed challenge to spark children’s curiosity about the world around them.

“This year 1032 local children took part across 47 Highland libraries, reading a total of 5260 books over the summer holidays, which is an amazing achievement.”

John West, High Life Highland’s head of culture and learning said: “It is great to have seen so many children and young people across the Highlands enjoying this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. This initiative gives everyone another reason to visit their local library to participate in an event at no cost, and at a time when free events are becoming increasingly important to families within our communities.”

Medals and certificates were presented recently to the children who completed the challenge to mark their achievement.
