Music Nairn welcomes acclaimed ensemble CarmenCo for new take on Bizey’s classic opera
An innovative version of the classic opera Carmen is set to be performed in Nairn.
The acclaimed ensemble CarmenCo will bring Bizet’s classic, told this time from the perspective of the fiery protagonist herself.
The show, A Pocket Opera, loosely follows Carmen’s narrative and presents the story with evocative costumes and props blending flamenco and immersive storytelling.
Composed of flautist and mezzo-soprano Emily Andrews and guitarists David Massey and Francisco Correa, CarmenCo will perform at Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Saturday, November 8 at 7.30pm, as part of the Music Nairn programme.
The three musicians perform entirely from memory, enabling them to act, dance in a fully choreographed party scene, and engage directly with the audience, often moving amongst them and involving them in the dialogue. It promises to be a fun-filled evening of fantasy, comedy, drama, and tremendous music.
The musical score is a collection of Spanish and Spanish-inspired repertoire, featuring arrangements created by the musicians for guitars and flute/voice.
The programme weaves together music from Bizet's Carmen (including the iconic Habanera and the chilling Card Aria) with a wealth of music by masters such as Boccherini, Manuel de Falla, Federico Garcia-Lorca, Granados, Ravel, and Albeniz.
