THE A9 has been revealed as Scotland’s most dangerous road, according to police statistics.

There were 25 accidents and 13 fatalities on the busy stretch, which passes through Inverness and the Black Isle, last year.

The second highest number of accidents was 10 on the A96 which links Inverness and Aberdeen and passes through Nairn. There were also five fatalities on this road.

Figures show there were 165 deaths in 147 fatal accidents on 78 of Scotland’s roads last year.

Despite the number of deaths, Transport Scotland said these latest official statistics confirm that road casualties in Scotland are actually at their lowest levels since records began.

A Scottish Government spokesman claimed the use of average speed cameras on the A9 had led to a reduction in casualties.
